Mobile Timing Belt Replacement Reading — At Your Home or Workplace
The timing belt (also called the cambelt) synchronises the crankshaft and camshaft(s) so the engine’s valves and pistons operate in precise sequence. When it fails — and it will if it is not replaced on schedule — the consequences are severe. A timing belt change is one of the most important preventative maintenance jobs on any petrol or diesel vehicle.
Why This Job Cannot Be Delayed
Unlike a brake pad that warns you with noise, a timing belt gives little or no warning before it snaps. There is no squeak, no warning light, no gradual deterioration. One moment the engine runs; the next, it does not.
The risk rises sharply after the replacement interval is exceeded. A belt that is 2,000 miles or 6 months overdue carries meaningfully higher risk than a belt changed on schedule. The cost of prevention (from £280) versus the cost of engine damage (from £1,500 to a complete write-off) is not comparable.
What Is Included in a Timing Belt Kit
We always replace the timing belt as a full kit — not the belt alone. The kit includes:
- Timing belt — OEM-spec or branded (Gates, Continental, Dayco)
- Tensioner pulley — controls belt tension under load
- Idler pulleys — guides belt alignment
- Water pump — recommended and included in our standard kit price
Fitting a new belt without replacing the tensioner and idler pulleys risks premature belt failure even with a new belt installed.
Can a Timing Belt Be Replaced at Home?
Yes — timing belt replacement is a job we carry out at driveways and car parks. The engine needs to be cold, the vehicle needs to be on level ground and accessible from the front. Some vehicles require removal of the front bumper assembly or auxiliary components for access. We confirm access requirements when booking.
Timing Belt Intervals by Common Vehicle
| Vehicle | Engine | Interval |
|---|---|---|
| Ford Focus / Fiesta 1.6 TDCi | TDCI diesel | 5 yrs / 100,000 miles |
| VW Golf / Audi A3 2.0 TDI | EA189 diesel | 5 yrs / 140,000 miles |
| Vauxhall Astra 1.3 CDTi | Z13DTJ | 5 yrs / 100,000 miles |
| Honda Civic 1.6 i-DTEC | N16A | 5 yrs / 75,000 miles |
| Toyota Avensis 2.0 D-4D | 1AD-FTV | 5 yrs / 100,000 miles |
Intervals vary by model year and engine variant. We look up the exact specification for your vehicle’s engine code before booking.

Frequently asked questions
When does a timing belt need replacing? +
Most vehicles require a timing belt replacement every 5 years or 60,000–80,000 miles, whichever comes first. Check your vehicle handbook or ask us to look up the interval for your exact engine code. Never rely on visual inspection alone — a timing belt can look intact and still fail.
Should I replace the water pump at the same time as the timing belt? +
Yes. The water pump is driven by the timing belt on most engines and is accessed during the timing belt change. The extra parts cost for a water pump is £30–80. Replacing it later would cost £200–300 in labour alone. If the water pump fails after a recent timing belt change, it can damage the new belt.
What happens if a timing belt breaks? +
On an interference engine (the majority of modern engines), the inlet and exhaust valves occupy the same space as the pistons at different times — the timing belt keeps them synchronised. If the belt snaps, pistons and valves collide. The result is bent valves, damaged pistons and in some cases a destroyed engine. Replacement costs range from £1,500 to £4,000+.
My car has a timing chain — does it still need replacing? +
Timing chains are designed to last the life of the engine but can stretch, causing timing to slip. Warning signs include a rattling noise on cold start, the engine management light and poor performance. Chain replacement is a significant job — we can diagnose chain stretch via OBD2 data.
