Mobile Clutch Replacement Reading & Berkshire

Mobile Clutch Replacement Reading & Berkshire

A clutch replacement is one of the most common major repairs a mobile mechanic carries out. We replace the complete clutch kit — pressure plate, friction disc and release bearing — plus the dual mass flywheel and concentric slave cylinder where needed, at your home or workplace in Reading and Berkshire.

Signs of a Failing Clutch

Slipping — Engine revs rise but road speed does not increase. Most noticeable in higher gears under load. The clutch surface is worn and cannot transfer power effectively.

Juddering — Vibration when pulling away from a standstill. Often caused by a contaminated clutch disc (oil or coolant leak) or worn dual mass flywheel.

High biting point — The clutch engages very close to the top of the pedal travel. Usually means the friction disc is near the end of its life.

Difficulty selecting gears — Hard or crunchy gear changes can indicate a worn or seized release bearing, or a failing concentric slave cylinder.

Clutch pedal sinking to the floor — Hydraulic failure in the master cylinder, clutch line or slave cylinder. The clutch may disengage and not re-engage.

Burning smell — Overheated clutch material. Can occur after heavy use on steep hills or if the clutch has been ridden.

What Is Included in a Clutch Replacement

A complete clutch kit (pressure plate, friction disc, release bearing) should always be replaced as a set — replacing components individually rarely makes financial sense given the labour cost of accessing the gearbox.

We inspect the following as part of every clutch replacement:

  • Dual mass flywheel — Measured for surface wear and rotational play
  • Concentric slave cylinder — Checked for leaks and operation
  • Input shaft seal — Replaced if leaking to prevent oil contamination of the new clutch
  • Crankshaft rear main seal — Inspected for weeping

All components that need replacing are quoted before work begins.

Can I Drive With a Slipping Clutch?

A slipping clutch will worsen with use and can leave you stranded. If the slip is moderate — occurring only at high revs under full load — you may be able to drive carefully to your home to allow the repair to be carried out there. If the clutch is slipping in normal driving conditions or the pedal has failed, do not drive the vehicle.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a clutch replacement take at the roadside? +

A clutch replacement typically takes 3–5 hours depending on the vehicle. Front-wheel drive hatchbacks and saloons are generally the quickest. Some vehicles with complex subframe arrangements or gearbox access issues may need to be booked into a static workshop, which we can arrange.

What is a dual mass flywheel and do I need to replace it? +

A dual mass flywheel (DMF) absorbs drivetrain vibration in diesel and modern petrol engines. When the clutch is replaced, the DMF should be inspected for wear, excessive rotational play and surface damage. If it shows wear it should be replaced at the same time — separating the jobs costs significantly more in labour.

Can a slipping clutch get worse quickly? +

Yes. A slipping clutch wears faster the more it slips. Continued use under load — towing, carrying passengers, hills — accelerates wear significantly. A clutch that slips under hard acceleration may fail completely within days or weeks of the first symptom appearing.
